Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the World Bank Group (World Bank) are strengthening efforts to bring electricity to more people across the region through geospatial planning.
Through the World Bank-funded ASCENT Program and in partnership with Imperial College London’s Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) Program, COMESA hosted a regional webinar on 2nd July 2026 highlighting how mapping technologies and location-based data can help countries plan smarter, faster and more cost-effective electrification projects.
Participants from across COMESA Member States learned how geospatial tools can identify communities without electricity, guide investments and support the rollout of the most suitable energy solutions, from grid expansion to mini-grids and solar systems.
The discussions also emphasized the importance of building national capacity, improving energy data systems and equipping technical experts with the skills needed to drive evidence-based energy planning.
Together, COMESA and its partners remain committed to accelerating sustainable energy access and ensuring that no community is left behind.
